Our customer works in some of the most complex construction challenges. They have a team dedicated to integrating their design tools with the project management and operations management tools.
Even though they previously integrated Plant 3D SQL Server data into their operations tool (Quickbase), when they moved to ACC, they were unable to get the SQL data out of the cloud into an accessible format.
Plant 3D does offer a manual workflow to get data out of SQLite projects. The process to update the SQL Server would look like this.
- Download latest collaboration project data.
- Detach existing SQL Server data
- Launch the Project Maintenance application (“C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 20XX\PLNT3D\PnPProjectMaintenance.exe”
- Use the Convert Project to SQL Server option.
This four-step process must be repeated every time a project must be updated. Assume a project lasts 40 weeks, they update 2x a week, and the time to manual run these steps is about 15 minutes.
The time to keep the SQL Server update is: (40 x 2 x 15) / 60 = 20 hours. At a cost rate of $75/hr, their company would spend about $1,500 per project to keep the data fresh.
Another factor is the expertise involved. Often setting up and running a process like this will involved several of the most capable people in an organization. Within 5-10 minutes of setup, Piping Labs BI saved them hours of headache while ensuring their project management team has the right data from Plant 3D.
